Bollywood Directors who Lost their Magic

I’ll say Bollywood is seriously lacking in good directors, we had only few good directors. And reason behind this is, in last 1-2 years we hardly saw a good movie. I think last good bollywood movie i saw was 3 Idiots and it has been more than 2 years but still I haven’t see a good Bollywood movie. One thing i noticed, some of Bollywood directors which had given good movies in past lost their magic. Their movies neither make business nor get critically acclaimed, don’t know what happened to them :(. In this post i want to highlights some of the directors names:

Subhash Ghai: Subhash Ghai is known as (or was known as) Showman of Bollywood, but from the last 3-4 years he’s struggling in giving a hit. His last 3-4 movies were biggest flops of respective years, Yaddie, Yuvraj, Kisna were some of films in that list.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali: Unfortunately, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has come in my list, Sanjay had gave some of the big hits which include the Hum Dil Chuke Sanam, Devdas and Black. But if we see his last movies Sawariya and Gujarish both failed in box office.

Mani Ratnam: Mani Ratnam is biggest name in my list, Mani sir is one of the my favourite director but in last few years he failed to fulfill the public expectations. Directors of movies like Roja, Dil Se, Bombay failed to make such type of classical movies again, his last movies Yuva, Guru, Ravana was not up to mark. I hope we will get some classical movies from him in future.

Aushutosh Gowariker: Aushutosh Gowariker, the director who had given Lagan movie to Bollywood is struggling in giving a good movie. If we see his last few movies for example, Whats your Rashi, Khale Ge Hum Gi Jaan se has not delivered well in box office nor acclaimed by critics.

Some of the other name which can come in my list are Vishal Bhardwaj, Aditya Chopra etc. I hope in next few year we will see some good movies form Subshah Ghai, Sanjay Leela, Mani and Aushutosh Gowariker.

  1. Yea you are right. Nice post.
It’s high time that this people should retire and give a chance to the new comers and their new ideas.

  2. Hello Vinay,
I don’t think these director should take retirement, we can’t deny they had given big hits to Bollywood, we need original ideas, good story, direction, efforts and commitment from them.

  3. It would be nice if they took and accepted stories and creativity from “normal people” that way freshness would be added and diversity would be something Bollywood should look into, after all the audience is globalized nowadays!
